This is what a broken wrist looks like after it has been wrapped in bandages with a splint for a month after wrist surgery. I broke my left wrist in June of 2018. I was walking along the side of the road when I tripped and landed on my wrist. I knew that I had broken it right away since a few years earlier I had broken my other wrist. I had to have surgery and pins put in my other wrist so I was hoping that it would not be the case with this one.
The doctors x-rayed my wrist and gave me a cat scan. They tried to set it so that I would only have to have a cast but they couldn’t set it. For some reason, whenever I break a wrist and doctors try to set it, there is always some kind of problem and then I end up having to have an operation. They decided that I needed to have surgery and they put pins and a plate in my left wrist. I had to wear a cast for about 6 weeks. It wasn’t that bad of a cast because it was a soft cast. The cast that I had on my other wrist was a much bigger hard cast. They gave me painkillers but I didn’t take any of them because I have a very high pain tolerance and I don’t like taking medication. I never took anything for pain. I felt very good after the operation.
During the operation, they injected a nerve blocker into my shoulder to numb my whole arm. That was absolutely terrible and I would never have that done again. I couldn’t feel my fingers or my arm for almost two days and for weeks that shoulder hurt more than my wrist did.
It took my wrist several months to fully recover. I had to go to therapy for about 6 weeks but I had pretty good movement compared to the other patients. We had to use little toys to get our wrist moving and I did very well with that.
